Harmonica Conference Energiser - Case Study
And here we want to give you a case study of a really fun event that we delivered in the Mermaid Theatre, London
The Brief: We were asked to provide a musical energiser for several hundred delegates who were attending an all day conference in the same space. The team leaders were conscious that the delegates would grow restless, lose concentration and lose engagement. Ultimately this would have a detrimental effect on the overall effectiveness of the conference and affect the delegates’ experience as well as their ability to remember the key messages. They asked us for ideas to create an uplifting and high energy energiser that was creative and would encourage the delegates to collaborate to create something special. The Solution: We put forward several of our favourite conference energisers that we felt would deliver the experience that they needed. They choose the harmonica music energiser session because it was so unusual, so much fun and would bring the group together to create a unique piece of music. Further more, each delegate would get their own harmonica to keep as a memento of the day! We love to maximise each moment so we kept the session as a surprise. Our award winning facilitator began expertly performing some blues harmonica music from behind the curtain. This piqued the delegates’ interest and got them smiling and clapping along immediately. Our facilitator then appeared on stage and encouraged everyone to get on their feet and keep clapping and stomping to the music. The energy in the room was instantly lifted and the excitement was palpable.No time was wasted to get the delegates involved and the harmonicas were distributed.
They then went on a journey to learn some authentic and fundamental harmonica techniques so they could produce the sounds. This included some hilarious steam train noises and cow moos!
But amongst the laughs and smiles, the delegates were actually learning the skills they needed to perform a piece of music.
So, of course, we couldn’t leave without that big final performance where everybody in the room played their part to create a huge sound.
Yes this was huge fun, yes it was unique, yes they got to keep a harmonica and yes it succeeded in raising the energy and getting everybody re-engaged. But beyond that some important messages were integral to the event.
The delegates were very aware that they can achieve anything when they work together, that the sum is greater than the parts, and that every single person has a role to play within the company, and that should be respected.
Logistics:
Another reason this works so well in a conference setting is that we can bounce on stage with no set up time. We can then exit at the end as quickly as any presenter walking off stage. This allows the session to slot in anywhere within the daily schedule without needing the room to be cleared or lengthy set up times. Perfect when you want to inject some energy into your conference without losing valuable time in a busy schedule.
